Police are investigating after several improvised explosive devices were found inside a vehicle in Spallumcheen on Monday night.

On Monday, January 22nd, 2024 around 11:45 p.m., a frontline officer from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a suspicious vehicle on Reservoir Road in Spallumcheen. The vehicle had failed to stop for police in Vernon earlier in the evening and the driver was taken into custody without incident. While searching the vehicle, the officer found several items that resembled hand grenades inside.  In consultation with the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, to ensure the safety of the public an area was cordoned off and the vehicle was left in place until EDU could attend. At approximately 12 p.m., on Tuesday, January 23rd, EDU officers attended the scene. After the items were rendered safe, an analysis of the contents confirmed the presence of explosives.

The driver of the vehicle was released from custody and police are continuing their investigation.
