File # 2022-6847

The investigation into a massive explosion that destroyed a Nanaimo home is continuing. On Monday February 28, 2022, investigators from City of Nanaimo Fire and Rescue, Fortis BC and the Nanaimo RCMP were on scene throughout the day. Investigators methodically sifted through materials from the home. Using heavy equipment that had been brought in to assist with the search, investigators were able to examine areas that had previously not been examined, which included the basement.

At this time, in consultation with partnering agencies, the investigation has been turned over to the Nanaimo RCMP to determine if foul play was involved in the explosion,  said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Investigators are asking if anyone saw anything suspicious on the property in the hours leading up to the explosion, that occurred at 8:20 PM on Sunday February 27, 2022, to please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-6847.
