File # 2022-5905

The noise is often unbearable at times said a resident who lives in the vicinity of the North Town Center Mall where revving engines and screeching tires has become a daily occurrence. What this individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, is referring to are gatherings of upwards of 30 vehicles in one of the parking lots located at the North Town Centre Mall. It is here that predominantly young adult males gather to race around the parking lot.

The Nanaimo RCMP have received many complaints of vehicles heard doing burnouts, drifting through the lot and sometimes, street racing.

Our Traffic Unit is taking the lead on this and they have fielded one to many calls from residents who are sick and tired of the constant tires screeching. Enforcement is being ramped up and we are serving notice to those participating in these illegal activities, that it is going to stop, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Recently, on the evening of Saturday February 19, 2022, officers issued several violation tickets against two drivers for Drive without Consideration and Excessive Noise. Officers have also noted an increase in reports of street racing and feel that the parking lot in question, may be the catalyst for this activity. The street racing takes this to an entirely different level as it is not only dangerous to those involved, it places other motorist and pedestrians at risk, said O’Brien.

Drivers should be aware that if you are found stunting or street racing, your vehicle may be impounded for 7 days, you will receive a hefty fine and if you are a new driver, you run the risk of having your licensed suspended.
