File # 2022-19019

A youth was struck and killed by a motor vehicle late Saturday night. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 PM on Saturday June 4, 2022, on the Nanaimo Parkway in the southbound lanes, near the Aulds Road intersection.

Police, Fire and EHS responded. Several motorists who were passing by called 911 to report that they had observed an unknown person running in and out of traffic and that moments later, this same person had been struck by a motor vehicle. The BC Coroners Service attended and confirmed the individual, who was later identified as a 15 male youth from Nanaimo, was deceased.

The highway was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene. On the morning of Sunday June 5th a female in her early twenties, came forward to police and indicated that she had struck the deceased with her vehicle and that she had not remained at the scene of the collision. The vehicle she was driving; an older model Nissan SUV, was seized for a forensic investigation. The woman was later released unconditionally.

At the time of the collision, it was cloudy, raining lightly, and the deceased was wearing dark clothing.

The Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services is engaged with the family and the investigation is continuing. If anyone has dash cam video or eye witness evidence, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-19019.
